Overview

Problem

Many older adults experience loneliness and social isolation after retirement due to increased free time but fewer opportunities for social engagement. This isolation can negatively impact mental and physical health, increasing the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and heart disease, ultimately reducing overall well-being.

Solution

To combat social isolation among older adults, I designed Open Club Center, a user-friendly mobile and web platform that encourages social participation. Open Club Center enables seniors to explore interests, join local activities, and build social connections through three core features:

1️⃣ Activity Discovery – Find and enroll in community events.
2️⃣ Community Forum – Engage in discussions and share experiences.
3️⃣ Reward System – Incentivizes participation with engagement-based rewards.

Research & Discovery

As a research assistant in Professor Tanuja's AI Beings Lab, I explored the causes and impacts of social isolation among older adults in America and Asia using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Through interviews and surveys, I found that loneliness is strongly linked to decreased mental well-being and lower quality of life.

However, I also discovered that seniors who actively engage in social activities report less loneliness and greater happiness. These findings became the foundation for my design decisions in Open Club Center — a platform aimed at fostering meaningful social participation among older adults through providing access to social resources.
